Inspired by Mc Donalds Breakfast - A Dinner made from Scratch

So Mike and I have not had McDonalds since Foston May 2003. I remember because it was on the way to the last Derision show (Mike's band at the time). I also remember because it was a time of social and political awakening for us which resulted in an ill conscience and on a purely physical level two very upset stomachs.

Though we have had an occasional sundae from there since then we haven't eaten food food but I got on a bit of a tangent after making some breakfast biscuits last weekend that it would be fun to try to imitate McDonald's breakfast from scratch. I didn't make the hash brown patties exactly because I am not trying to make the food look the same but make the same food home-made.

I thought it would frankly, mostly just be a silly dinner but at one point this afternoon just after I pulled the biscuits out of the oven I had a moment where my cooking felt traditional and wholesome. There I was in the kitchen on a quiet cloudy afternoon and I felt like I could be in the country or back in Minnesota and it felt really nice and not so silly.

For dessert, I took my little McDonald's Breakfast for Dinner one step further and made mini-apple pies.

We got back to silly as we happily wolfed down our biscuits, hash browns and pies.

Here is Josh and Mike enjoying the home-made viddles. I bought conscientious sausage for Mike and I and Boca sausages for Josh's biscuits. Mike and I are huge boca burger and chicken patty fans but aren't crazy about vegetarian sausage but I have discovered that to make vegetarian sausage taste yummy it is good to cook it in a lot of oil. :) Josh is skinny, it's okay.

Home-made Fast Food

Tonight I am making Mc Donald's-Food-For-Breakfast-Home-Made-Meaning-From-Scratch. :)
So sausage, egg and cheese biscuits, hash browns in the form of tot (more of a Taco John's thing) and mini-apple pies for dessert! I finished the apple pies and I couldn't wait to post the pictures. They are teeny and cute, though I did forget to brush with milk to brown them more nicely.

Crafts In Progress

I feel as though my new little blog has floundered a bit over the last couple of weeks. With Mike's surgery we have certainly been home but I have certainly not been in a routine and so the almost finished projects seem to be piling up. I am inspired and craftily active; in the month of May I have amassed the designs and materials for a good number of projects. I think June will be designated the month to stop planning new projects and wrap up some current projects. With that said, the above box is a gift I am giving tomorrow to my friend Deanna who paper crafts but hasn't been in the habit of using buttons, ribbon and embroidery floss much so I made her this little kit to enjoy. It was fun plowing through my boxes of ribbon cutting and twirling the ribbon to go in her kit. I enjoyed opening all my jars of buttons and selecting a variety of colors and sizes to add to her new collection. I love wrapping embroidery floss and piling them up in the corner. I also threw in a mini-pin cushion I made awhile ago for a craft day party that was left over.

This reminds me that my work friend Cortney mentioned that she bought a huge bag of buttons for $3 over the weekend and was afraid she suffered buyers remorse as she didn't know what to do with them. I of course heard "$3" and "giant bag of buttons" and had almost lost consciousness. :) I recovered well enough to tell her that if she ever sees another bag of buttons for $3 that she doesn't want for herself she should buy it and I would more than happily give her $3 and buy her a cup of coffee! I then brainstormed with her about all the magical things you can do with buttons. Luckily she knows me well enough not to think I am insane going on and on happily about how much I love buttons (Look at my last blog! I love buttons!)

Over the phone, I forced her to do a flickr search for "button jewelry" and with more than 5,000 pictures I think she began to understand... the magical world of buttons!

This is one of my unfinished projects I am committed to completing soon. I have to admit that I love the colors and the progress on this small quilt (30 x 30) but wasn't sure what or who it was intended for but luckily a little person joined the world recently and has provided all the inspiration I need. I do think I will wait to go into more detail when this little blanket has been delivered to its intended home. I just wanted to post to my crafty friends and my mom and brother-in-law most likely that I have been up to something and didn't want to leave my blog too bare for too long.

Wheels, Buttons, Birds

Mike is still recovering from his sinus surgery. He is doing really well and healing up but he still has to take it easy. This weekend we bought Mario Kart for the Wii and we have had a lot of fun playing. It is the only game I have any patience and ability in so it is fun to play with Mike.

Mike made us some Wii Miis that we play with.

I went fabric shopping and bought a pile of buttons just because... they were on sale and because I love buttons. I like to dump them out and organize them by color, my cats think it is great fun.

Their is a young family of "black phoebes". They are usually solitary birds that eat flying insects. You can generally recognize their call and recognize them from a distance because of their crazy flying antics when catching bugs. They are also the photographer's friend because they love perches that are up and clear of brush and are so busy watching for bugs they don't notice me too much. There is a young group of Phoebes in the neighbor's yard. They are fun to watch practicing being grown up birds. Random pictures, but all from what has turned out to be a pleasant and quiet memorial day weekend.
